Assistant Investigator, Investigations Branch. I work as part of a team investigating suspected fraud against the department. On a typical day the team investigates different cases and might travel to other offices, collect information, speak with employees and investigate issues that surround a case.
My qualifications are in management & IT, but I wanted broader experience. I applied for a few graduate programs, but DEEWR offered job placement rotations, which some didn’t. It had a strong reputation and the interview gave me a chance to speak to DEEWR staff about the program and what was involved.
Going to the Melbourne State Office for my second rotation. I’d never been to Melbourne before, and lived and worked there for 11 weeks. My flights and accommodation were paid for and I had plenty of support.
Working in a state office gave me a hands-on experience of what the department does—the National Office creates the policy, and the state office implements it. It was great seeing people affected by what the department does, and having a direct involvement in the community.
Well, I thought I’d never get into the Investigations Branch as a grad. You need security clearance and there’s not a lot of staff in here. We do investigations, so there’s a lot of responsibility and we have to maintain high standards.
Having a new job every 11 weeks is a challenge in itself, but a challenge I particularly enjoyed was working on the GradPad, the internal graduate network. I was one of the project managers who first established the network, including a website, newsletter and mailbox.
