DEEWR Graduate Program

The DEEWR Graduate Program aims to:

  • develop high-performing graduates to build the capability of the department for the future
  • develop graduates’ understanding of public sector administration and the business and operation of the department
  • provide opportunities for graduates to undertake work that develops and utilises their skills, knowledge and experience.

The DEEWR Graduate Program is a 10-month program designed to provide a range of developmental experiences for new graduates. Work placements, giving hands-on experience to various areas of the department, are central to the program.

The first 10 months of the program are development, starting with an intensive orientation, followed by work placements and training, which will kick-start your career in DEEWR and the Australian Public Service (APS).

During the Graduate Program, graduates will undertake a range of on-the-job activities, supported by formal, off-the-job learning events.

To maximise your career potential, you will be provided with substantial mentoring and coaching throughout your placements, as well as courses in:

  • project management
  • APS writing skills
  • policy formation and advice
  • Senate and legislative process
  • career directions.

The DEEWR Graduate Program also offers the opportunity to undertake three different placements in national, state and regional offices.

We provide a diverse range of careers and exciting work opportunities in:

  • legislation development
  • policy development, advice and implementation
  • program management
  • tender and contract management
  • regulatory compliance
  • direct client service
  • innovation and technology
  • organisational communication
  • leadership and management.

There is enormous variety in these job roles and a lot of scope to perform interesting work in the department.
The encouragement and development provided to graduates during the program prepares you for advancement upon successful completion of the program. Further promotion within DEEWR and the APS is based on merit. Many graduates reach executive level positions within three to five years after completion of the program.
DEEWR recruits graduates for all state offices including Perth, Darwin, Hobart, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Opportunities may also be available in regional locations such as Alice Springs, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Orange and Newcastle.

The department allows for a range of flexible work conditions and leave allowances including:

  • standard working week of 37½ hours
  • flextime—you can use extra time worked to take time off work
  • four weeks annual leave per year
  • long service leave after 10 years
  • personal leave that covers a range of circumstances.
