Financial Management Group

The Financial Management Group is responsible producing internal and external reports, co-ordinating the department’s internal and external budget processes, management of the financial operational functions and costing of new government measures.

Internal Audit

Internal Audit is responsible for reviewing department operations, providing independent advice and a consulting service, identifying risks, recommending corrective action or changes, bringing major issues to the attention of the Executive. The Branch also assists managers and staff to improve performance, accountability and fraud prevention in programs, systems and work practices.

DEEWR’s Accounting stream is for you if you have strong numerical and analytical skills, are good with Microsoft Excel, and like working as part of a team.

To be eligible, applicants must have completed, or be due to complete, a three-year undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, commerce, business (with accounting or finance major) or business administration from an Australian university by the end of the 2008 academic year.

Your work will be varied. You will assist with:

  • internal and external reports
  • financial statements
  • internal budgets
  • system changes
  • costing government decisions
  • Treasury management.

You will gain an understanding of the financial framework in the public sector, have the unique opportunity in assisting to ensure the effectiveness of DEEWR’s control, governance, performance management, accountability, systems and practices.

In addition, you will gain a sound understanding of all aspects of DEEWR’s responsibilities for education, employment, workplace relations, youth, early childhood and child care.

    • Upgrade of SAP financial system;
    • Completion of Financial statements;
    • Centralisation of asset management;
    • Implementation of purpose built credit card system.
You will gain an understanding of the financial framework in the public sector, have the opportunity to use and improve your skills in the workplace and learn on the job with great training and mentoring opportunities

During the DEEWR Graduate Program, you will be provided with substantial training, mentoring and coaching throughout your placements to maximise your career potential with courses in:

  • APS writing skills
  • project management
  • policy formation and advice
  • Senate and legislative process
  • career directions.

On the completion of the DEEWR Graduate Program, you will be eligible for financial assistance and leave for further study, including the CPA/CA.

There are often opportunities to move within the Finance group. These opportunities range from budgeting, financial reporting and new policy costings team. Internal Audit regularly undertakes recruitment exercises which are open to graduates once the DEEWR Graduate Program is complete.
