Employment Systems Group (ESG)

The Employment Systems Group (ESG) supports strong employment growth and the improved productive performance of Australian enterprises. ESG is responsible for the technical development and support of the information technology that underpins all of the services and programs delivered through the department including Job Network, Job Placement and Community Work Coordinators.

IT Services Group (ITSG)

In the IT Services Group currently consists of four branches and supports over 7000 desktops, 1200 servers, two state-of-the-art data centres, an IP phone network, numerous internet sites, multiple intranets and the full lifecycle of hundreds of applications and databases.

The IT stream is looking for professional graduates who want to make a positive start in their IT career, have strong IT skills and are keen to learn and develop these skills further and enjoy working in a fast-paced, challenging world of IT in which DEEWR is one of the leaders.

To be eligible, applicants must have completed, or be due to be complete, a tertiary degree specialising in net developing, business analysis, IT networking, systems management, SQL database development administration, application development, web development or management or network security, from an Australian university or tertiary institution (or equivalent) by the end of the 2008 academic year.

In the Employment Systems Group, the opportunities include business analyst, application development, testing, database administration, network design and business administration.

In the IT Services Group, previous and current IT specialist graduates have worked in many roles. Those that have a focus on application development typically rotate through various business analyst, developer and testing roles. Those that have networking experience can rotate through server management, incident management and troubleshooting, IT security and communications teams.

DEEWR is an early adopter of technology, with numerous hardware and application projects active at anytime. Graduates will have the benefit of the experience of over 300 IT professionals who provide ICT services to over 7000 users.

There are a number of locations that the IT stream can offer its staff to work in, and the department promotes flexible working conditions.

During the DEEWR Graduate Program, you will be provided with substantial mentoring and coaching throughout your placements to maximise your career potential. We provide courses in:

  • APS writing skills
  • project management
  • policy formation and advice
  • Senate and legislative process
  • career directions.

Upon successful completion of the DEEWR Graduate Program you will be offered a promotion to the APS 4 level. There are regular recruitment activities within the IT Groups and performance frameworks in place to manage and monitor your career progression.
